Severe Weather Net Script

Appendix 2
Script for Johnson County Severe Weather Net

Standard Operating Procedures

Used to activate the Johnson County Severe Weather Net ("Active" Mode) in response to a Severe Weather Warning (Severe Thunderstorm, Tornado, or Blizzard) or imminent threat of severe weather for Johnson County.

1. Initial announcement

QST, QST, QST. To all stations on this frequency, this is (state your callsign) activating the Johnson County Severe Weather Net in response to a (state type of severe WX event) Warning issued by the NWS.

(If the situation permits and the information is available, give the details of the Warning, e.g. when issued and expiration time).

This will be a directed net. All stations will be requested to check-in with (state your callsign) serving as Net Control. Once checked in, please stand by for additional information and directions.

2. First call for emergency traffic or stations observing conditions that exceeds minimum reporting criteria

First, I will take check-ins from stations that have emergency traffic including those observing conditions that exceed the minimum reporting criteria of (state these criteria). Giving me your call-sign, QTH, and report, please call (state your callsign).

Action: Log these initial reports (if any) and request that these stations stand by.

3. Request for check-ins from all other monitoring stations

I will now take check-ins from all other monitoring stations. Giving me your callsign, QTH, and report if any, please call (state your callsign).

Action: Log each station, noting their QTHs and reports.

4. Make initial assignments based on event needs and station locations

Action: Make necessary liaison assignments based on such factors as storm movement and information derived from reporting stations as well as other weather-related information.

Example: NØRXD, please serve as Linn County Liaison using the tactical callsign "Linn County" when reporting to this net. QSL?

5. Dispatch liaison stations to alternate frequencies

Action: Dispatch liaison stations to alternate frequencies as needed to take traffic from reporting stations or to pass traffic to other nets. When they have finished passing the traffic, have them return to the net primary frequency.

Example: NØRXD, please report to Linn County that a tornado is on the ground at Swisher and is moving north-east. Please return to this net after passing this traffic.

6. Ask for reports:

  1. from stations that have already checked in.
  2. If no new reports, ask for additional check-ins.

7. Repeat step 6 as required:

Until the Net is closed or until net control duties are passed to a new Net Control station.

Action: Periodically announce that the Johnson County Severe Weather Net is active under a (state the event) Warning and that it is a directed net. Also state that all traffic must be routed through Net Control.

8. Conclusion of net

Action: Maintain the Severe Weather Net in operation until either:

  1. the Severe Weather Warning has expired or been cancelled (see Section 9 below)
  2. Net Control duties are passed to another station
  3. the Severe Weather Warning has been downgraded to a Severe Weather Watch. In this case, shift the net status from Active to Standby Mode (see The Johnson County Weather Watch Script (Appendix 1)).

8. Securing the net

Since the NWS has now cancelled the Severe Weather Warning for Johnson County (or ... Since the Severe Weather Warning for Johnson County has now expired,....), this is Net Control Station (state your callsign) securing the Johnson County Severe Weather Net. Thanks to all participating stations for your assistance. The repeater is now available for normal amateur operations.
